Finally…a Doctor that cares!!! Dr. Maggie is amazing!!! She has saved my health, well-being and essentially, my life.
First off, I would like to say that I am not fabricating or exaggerating any of my story or perspective. I am a 41 year old young man that has lived, so I thought, a normal life for a husband and father of two young boys. I worked, exercised on weekends and ate pretty healthy, from a mainstream point of view. My diet consisted of meat, vegetables, rice, fruits, breads (preferably wheat), potatoes, cheeses and some processed foods. I have never been a big fan of eating fast food, but occasionally I did, as I am a sandwich lover. Approximately 9 months ago started to have several ailments and body pains that hit me particularly hard in the latter 4 months.
My ailments consisted of joint pain, joint ‘cracking,’ muscle weakness, body fatigue, severe brain fog, lack of motivation and just an overall sense of things going downhill in a hurry. At the time, I had seen my Primary Care Doctor, who could not do anything for me except prescribe pain medication. After several visits and negative lab results on basic blood work, he recommended for me to see a Rheumatologist. The Rheumatologist, in turn, took x-rays on my joints and ordered several blood samples for testing. Luckily, the x-rays came back negative for Rheumatoid Arthritis and the lab results were negative as well. That was all good news but my body continued to deteriorate. My Primary Doctor then sent me to see an Endocrinologist to get tested for Thyroid imbalances. I did so and was soon diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. I tested positive for Thyroid Antibodies, which meant that my immune system was attacking my thyroid and wreaking havoc on its way there. Luckily again, my thyroid function was normal and that the problem was caught before any permanent damage occurred, but it was clearly on its way! I was expecting the Endocrinologist to prescribe medication to either calm my immune system down or to relieve my symptoms. To my surprise I was told that there was nothing they could do until my thyroid function was compromised and that I need to go back to my Primary Doctor for him to monitor my thyroid every six months. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! Why would I go back to the same Doctor (MD) that recommended me to the ‘Specialists’, who couldn’t help me? I felt lost and out in the cold with nowhere to go and no answers. Than, by the Grace of God, I stumbled upon Dr. Maggie.
I was randomly searching the internet for some kind of answer or some direction and a happened to see Dr. Maggie’s website. I heard about functional medicine, but had no idea of how it was implemented. I gave her a call, by hunch, and set up an appointment. That has proven to be the best decision I could have possibly made. She quickly delved into my life history as a person and not as a number. She literally spent 2-3 hours just learning about me as a whole…from my diet, to my stresses, to my lifestyle, to my childhood, to my travels…and on…and on. She left no stone unturned. She wanted to breakdown and understand my life and me as a person up to that point. I then saw that this was not your ‘ordinary’ doctor just out for a pay check and that has only 5.2 minutes of time available before they frantically write you a prescription for medicine that you don’t need. Dr. Maggie cares!
She quickly dissected the fact that I was Vitamin D deficient, my diet was not up to par, my natural detox system was not functioning properly, my body was in toxic overload and that I had leaky gut. I left the office that day with my eyes and mind wide open. She gave me instructions to follow, before our next visit, along with additional blood work to be done. Finally someone with a plan! This was all by the end of my first visit. After 2 weeks had passed and my labs came in, at Dr. Maggie’s request, it showed that I was in deed Vitamin D deficient, I do have a gene that does not allow me to detox properly and I do have leaky gut. She quickly changed my diet. She wanted to find the source of my ailments and not simply treat the symptoms. Over the course of the next couple of months, I found out that I am also allergic to gluten. Since Dr. Maggie put me on a gluten free diet, just about all of my symptoms went away. My joint pain went away, my energy came back and I feel like I have control again. I still have a long way to go, but I am clearly on the right path to restoring my health and well-being. Thank you Dr. Maggie!
