• Dr. Maggie’s Medical Philosophy

I wanted to publish something on my website that was so profound and insightful the minute you read the article it would l change your life. I wanted one of those AH-HA moments for everyone that would visit me—one of those moments where you decide that indeed your health is in your hands, and that we truly are what we eat. Well, I think I found it. It came from Dr. Ben Lynch and this is what Dr. Lynch had to say …

“There is a fundamental approach required to support our bodily systems which is lost to symptomatic ‘treatment’ focused on the suppression of symptoms vs. the promotion of health. There is a reason it is called ‘healthcare;’ yet, given how it is currently managed, it should be called ‘illcare.’

If one supports their bodily systems, especially their digestion and mental health, with pure, highly absorbable, well-formulated nutrients, the ability to remain healthy and vital significantly increases. We want your foundation rock solid and we provide the tools to do so.

We believe the root cause for many health conditions and symptoms stem from ineffective digestion, environmental exposures, poor diet and lack of a healthy social outlet and inlet. Once digestion is restored and optimized with the best probiotics, digestive enzymes, stomach acid and intestinal repair nutrients, one is then able to absorb nutrients from food and from quality multivitamins. Once environmental exposures are reduced and determined, one is then able to reduce toxic burden which then frees up nutrients to work in promoting health and preventing disease. Once diet is optimized, nutrients flood in, energy increases, blood sugar stabilizes and the immune system balances. Once a social outlet and social inlet are created, the parasympathetic nervous system regains control over the reactive ‘fight or fight’ sympathetic nervous system which preserves countless nutrients to be used proactively and in a protective manner versus being wasted on over production of stress.”

My dear friends, time after time I see patients’ expecting to leave my office with “cure” in a bottle. Instead they leave with a notebook full of information and lots of homework. When I meet my patients I always ask if they are ready to go back to school. After they recover from the initial shock they ask me “WHY?”

I explain that their journey back to health needs to start with them educating themselves on what went wrong and then learning to fix it themselves. I guide them and educate them on their conditions and together we come up with a plan that is uniquely theirs.

I have learned that patients are super smart and have no preconceived notion of medical treatments, and if made active participants in their healing journey the results are exponential. Once they understand the why, how and when of their treatment they are much more compliant.

On several occasions I have had patients consider careers in healthcare after working with me. One patient was going to write a book about her health journey. It’s wonderful to see the new-found motivation in these patients once they start to feel healthy.

Science has now proven that there is a commonality to most diseases. That there is always a root cause and (if not genetic) that cause is the gut. We now know that about 90% of our immunity is in the gut as well as in countless other processes such as vitamins (k2) production, good-feeling hormones (gaba), etc.

We also know that 90% of our DNA comes from our gut biome and that we are basically 10% human and 90% bacteria. We live in a symbiotic system with our gut biome. Our mitochondria (the power house of energy) has its own DNA. According to Dr. Lynn Margulis (co-director of NASA’s planetary biology internship program) our mitochondria started as a bacteria that eventually learned to survive inside our cells. And there is a direct connection between gut and brain (GAPS by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride).

No building block, nutrient, fat, vitamin, protein, amino acid, enzymes, etc., can be distributed to our organs, tissues, brain or cells unless it goes through our gut first. Yes, we can absorb nutrients as well as toxins through our skin as well, but even most medication we have to swallow.

If you are suffering from depression, anxiety, or a similar psychological symptom and you visit your psychiatrist no doubt you leave his or her office with a prescription that will require that you put a drug in your stomach that will affect your brain, right? This is an example of why I do not understand when western medicine doctors emphatically deny the fact that foods can alter our mood. Perhaps they should ask their patients to rub the medication on their brains. Or as Dr Andrew Wakefield says “if you don’t believe that what you ingest can affects your brain come with me, and I’ll buy you a beer.”

So why have we mounted such a war against bacteria’s and viruses? Until now we did not know how important they were, just as we now know that the world is not flat. There is finally a medical movement that is interested in preventing, reversing and actually curing people. This is the specialty of functional medicine (FM).

When you visit a FM doctor he or she will perform an extensive history going all the way back to your conception and will order blood work to evaluate for certain markers. Some of these test you will be familiar with and others you may have never heard of. In my own practice my first visit is one hour. I start from your present symptoms and work my way back until I find the root cause of the disease. Going forward all aspect of a human being will be address. You are physical, emotional and spiritual. This is why I practice holistic medicine—to address the whole human being. You are not just a kidney, brain, heart, or lungs; you are a person living in a society with a family and responsibilities.

Let’s remember that disease is only a sign that your body has stopped compensating (or working on your behalf) and it can no longer defend you. The first line of treatment is to make sure that you are giving your body the right building blocks in the form of foods. It is only after you have made dietary and life style changes that I will consider supplements.

My dear friend it does not matter how expensive your supplements are or how clean and organic your food is if you do not “heal and seal” your gut. You will only get expensive pee. So never let anyone sell you a ton of supplements without first addressing your gut issue. This is the only part of my treatment that is common to all my patients. We need to heal and seal your gut before moving forward with any kind of treatment and before you can see any results (without emptying the bank).

Remember the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.“ The father of medicine, Hippocrates, said, “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine thy food.” Your health is in your hands. You and only you have control of the foods you eat. Dr. Campbell-McBride always says, “You can pay the butcher or you can pay your doctor.” That is your choice.

It is my job and my pleasure to join you on this journey to health and to come up with a plan that is realistic and doable for you. After the initial consultation in between follow ups I’m available to my patients via emails or/and texts and there is never any further charges.

This is my philosophy of how to healing the body. If you feel the same way as well please come and visit.

    Be well.
    Dr. Maggie
